FAQs
Product & Wine Storage FAQs
Q: What’s the difference between a wine cooler and a wine fridge?
A wine cooler is designed for short-to-medium-term storage at serving temperature, whereas a wine fridge (or wine cabinet) is more suited for long-term storage, keeping wines at optimal ageing conditions. Some models offer both functions.
Q: What temperature should wine be stored at?
- Red wine: 12–18°C
- White wine: 8–12°C
- Sparkling wine/Champagne: 5–8°C
Dual-zone coolers allow you to store reds and whites at their ideal temperatures in the same unit.
Q: What is a dual-zone wine fridge?
A dual-zone fridge has two separate compartments with independent temperature controls. This allows you to store red and white wines (or Champagne) at their optimal serving temperatures simultaneously.
Q: Do I need a freestanding or built-in wine cooler?
- Freestanding coolers: Stand alone and require ventilation space around the unit.
-
Built-in/integrated coolers: Fit flush into kitchen cabinetry, usually under counters. These have front-venting systems to prevent overheating.
Always check product dimensions before purchasing.
Q: How many bottles can the fridge hold?
Capacity varies from compact 6–12 bottle coolers to large 150+ bottle fridges. Bottle counts are usually based on standard Bordeaux bottles. If you store Champagne, Burgundy, or odd-shaped bottles, actual capacity may be lower.
Q: Are wine fridges noisy?
Noise levels vary depending on compressor or thermoelectric cooling. Most models are designed to be quiet, typically ranging from 35–45 decibels (similar to a library or quiet conversation).
Q: What’s the difference between thermoelectric and compressor cooling?
- Thermoelectric: Energy-efficient, quieter, and vibration-free, but less powerful for larger collections.
- Compressor: Stronger cooling, works in warmer rooms, and suited for larger fridges, though may produce slight vibration and noise.
Q: Do wine coolers control humidity?
Some higher-end models feature humidity regulation (around 50–70%) to keep corks from drying out. Standard models maintain natural humidity levels but are not fully humidity-controlled.
Q: Can I store other drinks in my wine fridge?
Yes, most coolers can store soft drinks, beers, or spirits, but temperatures are optimised for wine. Dedicated beverage fridges may be better for mixed drinks.
Q: How much ventilation space is required for my wine fridge?
- Freestanding models: At least 5–10 cm around the sides, back, and top.
- Built-in models: Only need front clearance (since they vent forward).
Q: Do wine fridges need plumbing?
No. All models plug into a standard mains power socket.
Q: Will my wine cooler affect my electricity bill?
Wine fridges are energy-efficient appliances. Annual running costs vary by size, but most are similar to a standard small refrigerator.
Q: How do I clean my wine fridge?
Unplug the unit, remove bottles and shelves, and wipe the interior with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Clean every 3–6 months for best performance.
